15 activities to keep kids entertained and engaged in learning

 

Have you said summer break? Holidays are a great time to reconnect with each other… and appreciate the hard work teachers do thorough the year. Don’t worry, we have your back! We have compiled a list of 15 activities that will keep your kids entertained and learning. Most of these require little to no budget and minimal material - just a good dose of fun and creativity! Happy learning!

  2. Go for a walk in the forest or at the park and use a plant identification app like LeafSnap to learn more about the vegetation around you

  3. Turn the kitchen into a science lab! Click here for inspiring STEAM challenges

  4. Read a book together to tell stories about Indigenous Peoples - There is a list of recommendations here

5. Build a bug hotel

6. Do something nice for someone. Your neighbor, your grandma, the stranger in front of you - spread kindness!

7. Follow the recommendations of our Chief Kw’eh community challenge and learn how to design bracelets to honor someone important in your life

8. Build your own Estuary! Explore brackish water with this ready-to-use kit.

9. Introduce your kids to the basic principles of composting! Fun times ahead! All the instructions are on this video 

10. Build a pillow ford. It’s a classic and it’s never a miss.

12. Grow popcorn plants! Follow the instructions here

13. Spend a night in a tent! Nature is a fantastic playground and kids love it. No need to go too far either, there are recreational sites (almost) everywhere. If you have a garden, you can also just pitch the tent there, it is a great way to get them into camping.

14. Build an ants farm with glass jars! Have fun observing how ants dig tunnels… and don’t forget to release them back into their natural habitat at the end of your experience. Learn how to build your own here

15. Build a Stored Energy Machine Rube Goldberg style

A Rube Goldberg machine is a chain reaction–type machine designed to perform a simple task in an extremely complicated way.
